Three Teams. One Weekend. Vaughan HPP Heads to the OBAs

A baseball season that began with months of indoor training has reached its final weekend.

For the Vaughan Vikings HPP program, three teams are still playing.

The 13U, 15U and 16U HPP teams have all qualified for the 2026 Baseball Ontario AAA Provincial Championships, putting three different age groups from the program into the OBAs on the same Labour Day weekend. The 13U and 15U championships will be played at home in Vaughan, while the 16U group will compete in Aurora.

After everything these teams have experienced this season, the OBAs provide one final opportunity to see how far they have come.

13U: A Season Full of Experiences

The 13U group has already packed a lot into one season.

They travelled to Alberta for the Father's Day Classic in Okotoks, where they reached the semifinals against strong competition, and later won their home Vaughan tournament.

Their biggest challenge came during Baseball Ontario's National Qualifier process. The 13U tournament required a preliminary round in July before the final qualifier at the end of the month, with the teams advancing ultimately competing for the opportunity to represent Ontario at Nationals.

Vaughan made it through the preliminary stage and played six games during the final tournament before its run came to an end.

That experience matters heading into September.

The group has already played meaningful games with something on the line. They have experienced success, disappointment and the pressure of tournament baseball. Now they get another opportunity, this time with the 13U AAA Provincial Championship being played in Vaughan.

15U: Already Among Ontario's Best

The 15U group doesn't have to wonder whether it can compete with the top teams in Ontario.

It already proved it.

Earlier this season, Vaughan reached the final of its home tournament after putting together a 4–2 weekend and scoring 67 runs over six games.

Then came the Baseball Ontario National Qualifier.

Vaughan battled through a demanding tournament and finished third, narrowly missing the opportunity to represent Ontario at the Baseball Canada 15U National Championship. Durham eventually advanced and went on to win the national championship for Ontario.

Finishing that close can be difficult, but it also showed the level this group is capable of playing at.

Now the 15U team gets another chance to compete for something significant, and it will happen on its home fields with Vaughan hosting the 15U AAA Provincial Championship.

16U: A Different Road to September

The 16U group took a different path this summer.

The team travelled outside Ontario to compete in Indiana and also joined the 15U group on a trip to Houston, exposing the players to different opponents and baseball environments beyond their regular schedule.

Several players also had the opportunity to represent YSBA at the Ontario Summer Games in Waterloo. YSBA reached the gold-medal game and finished with silver in the 16U boys tournament, adding another high-level experience to the season for the Vaughan players involved.

Now those players are back together with their Vaughan teammates.

Unlike the younger two groups, the 16U team will travel for its provincial championship, with Aurora King hosting the 16U AAA OBAs.

What Three Teams Reaching the OBAs Represents

There is obviously still baseball left to play, and nobody knows how the weekend will finish.

But having the 13U, 15U and 16U HPP teams all qualify for the AAA Provincial Championships is something worth recognizing.

These aren't three identical teams.

They are at different ages, have different strengths and have travelled different paths throughout the summer. That's actually what makes this weekend interesting from a development perspective.

The purpose of a development program isn't to create one successful team during one particular season. It is to establish an environment where players at multiple ages are being challenged and learning how to compete as they progress through the program.

This weekend provides a snapshot of that.

Three consecutive HPP age groups will be competing in the highest Baseball Ontario provincial classification available to them.

One Weekend Left

By September, there isn't much left to talk about.

The offseason training is finished. The tournaments have been played. The road trips are over. The regular season has provided its lessons.

One final weekend to see where an entire season of work can take them.
