Vaughan Vikings 13U Crowned Tournament Champions

Hosting a tournament brings a different kind of pressure.

You're playing in front of your own families. You're sleeping in your own beds. Every opponent wants to knock off the home team, and there are no excuses if things don't go your way.

The Vaughan Vikings 13U HPP embraced that challenge from the very first pitch.

Although the tournament began on June 12 and was scheduled to conclude on June 14, weather forced Championship Day to be postponed until July 10. Nearly four weeks later, the Vikings returned to finish what they had started, ultimately capturing the Vaughan Tournament championship on their home field.

A Fast Start

The Vikings opened the tournament with a convincing 12-4 victory over the Martingrove White Sox, immediately establishing the style of baseball they would play throughout the event.

Adrian B led the offense with four RBIs, while Ben and Adrian P each collected two hits. Vaughan also stole nine bases, constantly putting pressure on the Martingrove defense. On the mound, Adrian B struck out five over two scoreless innings before Luca and Maxwell combined to close out the win.

It was a complete performance on both sides of the ball and an ideal way to begin tournament play.

Pitching Takes Over

The second game belonged to the pitching staff.

Ben delivered one of the tournament's most dominant outings, striking out 12 hitters over 5⅔ shutout innings while allowing just two hits against the Oakville A's. Gabriel came on in relief to record the final out as the pair combined for a 4-0 shutout.

The offense provided plenty of support, collecting 11 hits while playing flawless defense behind its pitchers. Gabriel, Mason S, Luca, and Mason T each drove in runs as Vaughan improved to 2-0.

A Battle Until the Final Out

Tournament baseball isn't always one-sided.

Later that day, Vaughan found itself locked in an offensive battle with North York that ended in an 11-11 tie.

Maxwell turned in one of the tournament's top individual performances, finishing a perfect 3-for-3 with a single, double, and triple. Mason S, Hudson, Nico, and Adrian B also recorded multiple-hit games as the Vikings answered every challenge in a contest that featured several momentum swings.

Good tournament teams don't panic when games become chaotic.

They continue competing one pitch at a time, and Vaughan did exactly that.

Earning the Opportunity

On Sunday, the Vikings returned to their winning formula.

After falling behind early against the West Toronto Wildcats, Vaughan answered immediately and pulled away for a 9-2 victory.

Luca and Hudson each drove in three runs, while Adrian B continued his outstanding tournament by striking out seven over 5⅔ innings. Maxwell recorded the final outs as Vaughan secured its place in the tournament final.

The championship was set.

The only thing left to do was wait.

Championship Day

When Championship Day finally arrived on July 10, nearly four weeks after the tournament began, the Vikings showed there was no rust.

Facing the HPP Tigers in the tournament final, Vaughan exploded for a 19-5 victory to capture the championship.

Hudson wasted little time putting the Vikings in control with a first-inning grand slam before the offense erupted for 11 runs in the seventh inning. Luca delivered the biggest swing of the afternoon, launching a three-run home run as part of a three-hit, four-RBI performance. Nico drove in four runs, Raymond added an RBI double, and the lineup continued to apply pressure until the final out.

On the mound, Ben earned the victory by striking out eight over five strong innings, while Mason S closed the game with a scoreless inning to secure the championship.

Home Champions

Winning a tournament is difficult.

Winning your own tournament brings an entirely different level of expectation.

Over the course of nearly a month, Vaughan met every challenge in front of them. Different players stepped up each game, the pitching staff consistently gave the team a chance to win, and the offense delivered whenever opportunities presented themselves.

The weather delayed the ending.

It didn't change who the best team was.

On their own field, the Vikings finished the job and lifted the tournament championship.
